TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Big Mac is back.
Jamie McMurray, who has been absent from Victory Lane for nearly two years, returned in wild fashion on Sunday thanks to a multi-car wreck on the final lap of the Camping World 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
It was the second race in as many days to end with a wreck on the last lap.
This time, McMurray was in the lead to start the final lap with Dale Earnhardt Jr. close behind him but on the backstretch Austin Dillon got loose and spun, which triggered a violent wreck, and the caution was displayed, which froze the field.
McMurray earned the Sprint Cup Series victory. Earnhardt finished second, Paul Menard was third, Kyle Busch was fourth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fifth.
Jimmie Johnson took over the series points lead and holds a four-point advantage over Matt Kenseth with four races remaining.
Pole-winner Aric Almirola led the first lap of Sunday's race but that was just the start of a wild day of numerous lead changes.
Tony Raines' engine blew and dropped oil on the track which brought out the race's first caution on Lap 4. Almirola held the lead on the restart on Lap 8 only to see Jeff Burton quickly move to the top spot.
Kenseth took control of the race on Lap 26 and led 16 laps until a round of green-flag pit stops began on Lap 41.
During the round of stops, both Brad Keselowski and Bobby Labonte were penalized by NASCAR for speeding on pit road. Kyle Busch was forced to make two pit stops when he missed his pit stall on the first stop.
Once the cycle of pit stops was completed on Lap 48, Earnhardt emerged as the leader followed by Marcos Ambrose, Johnson, Greg Biffle and Denny Hamlin.
Ambrose got loose, dove down the track and into Juan Pablo Montoya to bring out the second caution of the race on Lap 80. After a round of pit stops, Johnson was the leader on the restart on Lap 85 followed by Kenseth and Earnhardt.
At the halfway mark, Clint Bowyer had moved into the lead followed by Johnson and Almirola.
Another round of green-flag pit stops began on Lap 121. During the round of pit stops Kasey Kahne was penalized for speeding on pit road.
When the cycle of stops were completed on Lap 125, Almirola led the way followed by Earnhardt and Casey Mears.
With 50 laps remaining, Earnhardt was back in the lead followed by Kurt Busch and Johnson.
With 30 laps left, Earnhardt continued to lead followed by Jeff Gordon and Stenhouse.
Teams began a final round of green-flag pit stops on Lap 161. Once the cycle was completed on Lap 166, Kyle Busch took over the race lead followed by Greg Biffle and Gordon.
With 10 laps remaining, McMurray moved out to the lead.
