RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina was on the verge of putting the finishing touches on a solid victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night.
Then Henrik Zetterberg and Stephen Weiss wrecked the Hurricanes' night, scoring late goals in quick succession to give the Red Wings a 3-2 win at PNC Arena.
Zetterberg scored on a scramble with 16.4 seconds left, snapping a backhander past Carolina goalie Cam Ward.
Weiss then cleaned up a rebound with 1:47 remaining in overtime to give the Red Wings the win.
Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe provided the offense for Carolina, scoring goals in their first game with the Hurricanes.
Meanwhile, Ward, one of the longest-serving members of the Hurricanes, had a strong game, making 35 saves.
Defenseman Justin Faulk also provided Carolina with a lift, picking up two assists and making a handful of defensive plays that negated quality opportunities for the Red Wings.
Dvorak, playing in his 18th NHL season, began his career way back in 1995. After scoring four goals in nine games for Anaheim last season, the native of the Czech Republic might have considered retirement this past offseason, but he found he still had a passion for the game.
He came to camp with Carolina on a tryout basis, doing enough to earn a one-year contract Wednesday
With his immediate future assured, Dvorak scored the Hurricanes' first goal of the season, putting the finishing touches on a well-developed play from Faulk and Jeff Skinner.
After taking a pass from Riley Nash, Faulk skated out of the zone and found Skinner along the boards. Just before crossing the blue line, Skinner floated the puck beyond Detroit defender Kyle Quincey toward the Detroit net. Dvorak swiped at the puck just before it got to goaltender Jimmy Howard, knocking it above Howard's shoulder.
Gerbe, meanwhile, played in Buffalo last season and was signed by the Hurricanes in July. The diminutive winger had a strong training camp, building a rapport on a line with Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer.
And while that relationship could pay dividends as the regular season progresses, Gerbe actually scored on the power play against the Red Wings, quickly sweeping the puck past Howard after a Faulk shot from the point was deflected right to him.
The Red Wings, who are playing their first season in the Eastern Conference, gave the sizable contingent of Detroit fans in the sellout crowd at PNC Arena something to cheer about early in the third period.
A Zetterberg pass from the left boards deflected off the stick of Faulk and ricocheted directly to Justin Abdelkader, who beat Ward between the legs from near the right faceoff circle.
Five players made their debut for Carolina -- Dvorak, Gerbe, first-round draft pick Elias Lindholm, Andrej Sekera (a defenseman acquired from Buffalo) and Ron Hainsey (a free agent signed from Winnipeg). Defenseman Mike Komisarek, a free agent signing, was a healthy scratch.
