PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., resident and two-time golf major tournament winner Rory McIlroy announced he broke off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki just a few days after sending out wedding invitations.
McIlroy, 25, and Wozniacki, 23, have been dating since 2011 and were engaged on New Year's Eve.
But on Wednesday at a tournament in England, McIlroy told reporters, "It was mutual, and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I've said all that I need to say."
The decision surprised many in the sports world, partly because the two have regularly been on social media talking about their relationship and made regular comments to the media about how much they enjoyed watching each other compete.
The two have each been ranked No. 1 in the world in their respective sports, and both remain high in their sport's world rankings. McIlroy is from Northern Ireland, and Wozniacki is from Denmark.
In an earlier statement Wednesday, McIlroy said he was to blame for the breakup.
"The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.
"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."
While the end of the relationship came as a shock for most, this certainly didn't: An Irish bookmaker is already taking bets on who McIlroy's next girlfriend will be.
