Colonial will feature two of the world's top four players this week

Adam Scott overtook Tiger Woods as the world's top-ranked golfer Monday, assuring that the No. 1 player in the world golf rankings is in the field at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial for the first time since 1995.

When he competes in Fort Worth, Scott will be making his debut as the world's top-ranked golfer by a narrow margin during a week when the top five players are tightly bunched.

In the two-year rolling average that determines the world rankings, Scott has 7.9936 average points. That places him ahead of Woods (7.8495), who is losing roughly 0.2 average points per week while he is sidelined because of back surgery.

The top players are so tightly bunched, it is possible that Colonial competitor Matt Kuchar (7.1229), the No. 4 player in the rankings, could make a strong run at the top spot if Kuchar wins in Fort Worth and Scott, 33, struggles.

The last time the No. 1 player in the world rankings competed in Fort Worth was at the 1995 Colonial, when top-ranked Nick Price was the defending champion.

Although widely recognized as the world's top-ranked female golfer when she competed in the 2003 Colonial, Annika Sorenstam made her appearance in Fort Worth three years before the debut of the official women's world golf rankings in 2006.

The last time either of the DFW tour stops landed the world's top-ranked golfer was 2005, when Woods missed the cut at the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Phil Mickelson had a chance to overtake Woods for the No. 1 spot with a strong finish at the 2010 Colonial, but he missed the cut.

Heading into this week's professional events, the top five golfers in the world rankings are separated by 0.9057 average points. In order, they are: Scott (7.9936), Woods (7.8495), Henrik Stenson (7.7203). Kuchar (7.1229) and Bubba Watson (7.0429).

Scott and Kuchar are competing at Colonial, where No. 9 Jordan Spieth (6.0949) is the third top-10 golfer slated to play in Fort Worth.
