Pouncey makes social media gaffe

DAVIE, Fla. -- Dolphins Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey perhaps did not get the message when he was implicated in the Ted Wells Report for his role in last season's bullying scandal.

After the Dolphins selected Tennessee right tackle Ja'Wuan James in the first round of the draft, Pouncey tweeted, "Great pick! Can't wait for our gifts he's getting us lol," a veiled reference to rookie hazing rituals.

The tweet attracted attention from Warren Sapp, the Hall of Fame defensive tackle, among others. Sapp tweeted, "Some folks been dumb a long time!"

Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey addressed the matter Friday, saying the team spoke with Pouncey about the tweet.

"We talked with Mike," Hickey said Friday after James' media session. "Mike understands sometimes things can be taken out of context and what's meant as a light-hearted comment can be taken out of context. We talked with Mike and he was good with that and understands social media is a great tool to reach our fans and for the positive but you just have to make good choices with that. So we're all good there, we had a good conversation with Mike and that's kind of where we're at."

James said he wasn't offended by Pouncey's tweet.

"I don't have a reaction," he said. "He was probably just playing, saying things, It's all part of the process, being a rookie. I'm just looking forward to coming in and working with these new guys."

Pouncey and former guards Richie Incognito and John Jerry were named in the Wells Report as having harassed former tackle Jonathan Martin last season.

Pouncey joked about rookie hazing last season in the midst of the Incognito-Martin scandal. During a turkey giveaway at the team facility before Thanksgiving the veterans were making the rookies carry boxed turkey dinners to the cars of the recipients. Pouncey laughingly joked it was a case of rookie hazing. Teammates largely ignored the remark.

Because of his participation in the bullying and harassment, Pouncey has to be cleared by a medical professional before returning to the field. Last week, Hickey said they have no word on when that will happen.

The Dolphins recently picked up the fifth-year option on Pouncey's contract and Pouncey attended a team-sponsored dinner welcoming left tackle Branden Albert to the team in March after Albert signed a free agent contract.
