Vale of York, an Irish-bred colt who raced earlier in England and Italy for Godolphin Stable, finished a head better than locally based favorite, Lookin At Lucky in the $2 million race. Noble's Promise was third, 1/2 length farther back and a head in front of another long shot, Piscitelli, who held fourth after leading much of the way.

Miami is 7-2 overall (4-2 in the ACC) after winning for the fifth time in six games. Virginia (3-6, 2-3) lost its third consecutive game.

It's Federer and Djokovic in Swiss final

Djokovic, seeded second, earned his ATP-best ninth finals appearance of the year with a taut 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 5-seeded Radek Stepanek. Djokovic fought off three Stepanek match points before taking control.

The wins put Italy up 2-0 in the best-of-five Fed Cup title series in Italy. If either Pennetta or Schiavone win their singles matches Sunday or the Italian team takes the double match, Italy will win its second Fed Cup championship.

California Flag wins BC Turf Sprint

At the wire, the California-bred gray gelding was 1 3/4 lengths better than late-running Gotta Have Her, with Cannonball third. California Flag, a 5-year-old son of Avenue of Flags, ran the about 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:11.28, just shy of his own course-record time of 1:11.10.

Dancing in Silks Upsets BC Sprint

Dancing in Silks, racing between horses down the stretch, got by pace-setting Cost of Freedom in the final jumps, finishing just a nose in front of Crown of Thorns. Cost of Freedom saved third, a head farther back.

Iowa was ahead 10-0 in the second quarter when starting quarterback Rick Stanzi fumbled in the end zone and Thomas was recovered it for the first Northwestern touchdown.
