Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Wednesday he is in the process of trying to contact Jean Segura to see what the young shortstop's plans are to rejoin the team.
Segura returned to the Dominican Republic last weekend after learning his 9-month-old son, Janniel, had passed away after a brief illness. The Brewers put Segura on the bereavement list and he can remain on there through Friday, when the club would have to put him on the restricted list if he remains away.
"I've made phone calls today to try to make contact with him," Melvin said. "I haven't been able to make contact at this time. I'm hoping to find out today. We've left messages but we haven't heard back. We just don't know right now."
The Brewers summoned infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera from Class AAA Nashville after Segura was placed on the bereavement list, so he remains on the roster until the club learns when Segura will return.
Once Segura does return, the Brewers aren't sure what to expect as far as his readiness to return to play.
"There are a lot of unknowns here," Melvin said. "Whatever Jean decides, we will support him. And we know his teammates will be there for him, too."
