SAN DIEGO -- The Cardinals have found their Saturday starter.
The Cardinals traded a prospect Wednesday afternoon for Cleveland Indians righty Justin Masterson, a source confirmed to the Post-Dispatch shortly before the teams announced the trade.
The club also announced that Masterson will start Saturday against Milwaukee after joining the team Friday in St. Louis.
Masterson is on the disabled list with a knee injury, but players can be traded while they are on the DL and the right-hander is scheduled to come off the DL on Friday.
The Cardinals sent Class AA outfielder James Ramsey to Cleveland to complete the deal.
The Cardinals, who have pursued both Boston's Jon Lester and Tampa Bay's David Price this season, remain engaged with teams about other starters.
The Masterson deal does not preclude the Cardinals from pursuing other targets as Thursday's trade deadline approaches. It adds a pitcher who brings innings to the rotation while not costing them any of the prospects that have been involved in other discussions. His addition would allow the Cardinals to consider moving a pitcher they currently have in the rotation.
