SS veteran charged with killing 58 Jews
The defendant, identified by German news media as 90-year-old Adolf Storms of Duisburg, is being prosecuted by Ulrich Maass, The Times of London reported. Maass is also handling the case of Heinrich Boere, 88, who was recently charged with killing three members of the Dutch resistance.
Storms, who served with the 5th Panzer Wiking Division of the Waffen SS, allegedly killed 58 Jews in 1945, 57 of them near Deutsch Schuetzen in Austria. Their bodies were found in 1995 by the Austrian Jewish Association.
"On March 29, 1945, the accused and his accomplices brought at least 57 Jewish forced laborers in several groups to a nearby forest area, where they had to surrender their valuables and kneel by a grave," the court said. "The accused and other SS members then cruelly shot the Jewish forced laborers from behind."
Andreas Forster, 28, a student at the University of Vienna, became interested in the massacre through research into a Hitler Youth unit that buried the victims in a mass grave.
