Sikhs block traffic in Mumbai
The shooting occurred during a demonstration Friday against Ram Rahim Singh, head of the Dera Sacha Rauda religious group, the Press Trust of India reported. Protesters said that his guards fired into the crowd, killing one man.
The next day, protesters blocked one busy highway for three hours until police used tear gas to disperse them. They delayed trains for 45 minutes.
In the Mulund district, where the killing occurred, shopkeepers were forced to close Saturday.
Dera Sacha Sauda, founded in 1948, rejects other religions and encourages charity and meditation by its followers. Last year, its leader appeared in an advertisement that Sikhs regarded as insulting.
