Ethics panel weighs Sanford charges
The nine-member State Ethics Commission, meeting in Columbia, S.C., was expected to announce its findings as early as Wednesday, The (Columbia) State reported.
State lawmakers weighing whether to impeach Sanford say the commission's findings will play a key role in their decision. Republican state lawmakers filed a resolution to impeach the GOP chief executive Tuesday, charging him abandoning his duties when he secretly left the country to spend time with his Argentine mistress earlier this year, the newspaper said.
"Unless the (Ethics Commission) investigation contains new information about serious crimes or serious misconduct by the governor, the information we have to date does not rise to a level to remove him from office," House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, said in a statement.
The commission could decide to charge Sanford with ethics violations and set a date for a hearing on them, the newspaper said.
