Italian tourist town targeted by Catholics

An army of young Catholics say they plan to invade one of Italy's most notoriously wild tourist destinations on the Adriatic Riviera.

The group of about 120 volunteers from all over Italy said they plan to spend Wednesday through Sunday ministering to tourists at the rowdy beaches, bars and discos of Riccione, ANSA reported Tuesday.

''So many young people go out every evening excited and ready to conquer the night, and the next morning they find themselves robbed of a dream,'' said one of the event's organizers, Riccione parish priest Franco Mastrolonardo.

''I see them walking along the street from the window of the parish church in the early hours of the morning and they look dizzy, tired and above all sad,'' he said. ''The aim of this event will not be to demonize worldly life but to propose an alternative lifestyle to find happiness."

Volunteers said they have all taken a pledge not to enjoy any of Riccione's refreshing beaches or ice cream until their mission is completed Sunday.

Okay...

This may be an interesting experiment, but they may get more than they bargain for.

As long as they don't go in with an "us vs. them" or self-righteous attitude, they may help some people find what they're looking for.

I have all kinds of problems with the Catholic Church, shau, but I don't think it's fair to classify all catholics as hypocrites. The moment we judge all people from a group the same way, we are stepping into dangerous territory.
