Thousands protest healthcare bill in D.C.

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Thousands of demonstrators in Washington, led by dozens of congressional Republicans, protested proposed healthcare reform legislation.

The demonstration at the U.S. Capitol followed a call by Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., for opponents of reform to take their complaints to Congress, and to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in particular. Bachmann billed the event as a "Health Care House Call."

"Speaker Pelosi is poised with her healthcare bill to take over 18 percent of the American economy," Bachmann said as chants of "Kill the bill" rang through the crowd.

"The Republicans don't have the votes to kill this bill," she said, "but what we knew was unlimited was the voice of persuasion of the American people."

Speaking on a conference call Wednesday with members of the advocacy group Americans for Prosperity, Bachmann said bloggers and activists could thwart the bill's passage, Politico reported.

"Nothing scares members of Congress more than freedom-loving Americans," Bachmann said.

Many House Democrats favor inclusion of a public, or government-run, healthcare option in reform legislation, one of several reform proposals that have sparked anger among conservatives.

The American Medical Association and AARP Thursday announced their endorsement of the bill, which could come up for a vote Saturday in the House.

"We are closer to passing this reform than ever before," President Barack Obama said in response to the AMA and AARP endorsements.

The protest in Washington Thursday featured appearances by actor Jon Voight and talk show host Mark Levin. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, called the reform bill "the greatest threat to freedom that I have seen in the 19 years that I've been here in Washington."

Several protesters were arrested, including nine who refused to leave an office in the Capitol.

Protest on health Care

No matter what happens people will protest so big deal....but it seems the Republicans go out of their way to protest everything, especially anything that did not originate with them....yet tyeh still fail to put forward anything in real health care reform themselves. I still want to see substantive health care cost reduction, my $ going to healthcare , not insurance companies, and and a strong public option. Those who condemn the Candadian, British and other Euro health care systems might as well be ostriches with their heads in the ground (that's being polite). And any Republican claims to vote gains....it was because other politicians failed to deliver. And when they don't they need to be voted out of office quickly, no matter what party they represent. God bless MAJOR health care reform!

To Tim , As you know I am Canadian and the only people who are not eligible for Canadian health care are those that are undocumented everyone else is covered.
In the US's present system undocumented or illegal aliens can all make health claims and welfare claims , which the American taxpayers pay for .
In fact it is quite the scam to live in Mexico and walk across the border claim their American welfare check and walk back to Mexico and live quite well .
If they are sick or broke the US taxpayer gives them money .
Personally I think I prefer the Canadian system with all its imperfections as it seems quite a bit more fair to the taxpayers who fund it .

Once again the far left can not, or will not post without being disagreable. If they are so darned smart, why don't they come up with a healthcare plan that is less than 2,000 pages. Let them come up with a plan that won't give government total control of your and everybody elses life. I know of one woman who is a citizen of Canada not the USA who had a hip replacment on the gov't dime, and she is a convicted felon who does not work. She probably would not have needed the hip replacment if she had not let herself get to 300 pounds, but I guess we should pay her way. Why not???

To JDB , the only thing I can see immediately wrong with Government paid medical is that here in Canada when political parties make unusual ( sarcasm ) financial blunders they have a habit of cut funding for medical care . Because it costs them quite a bit of their budget they always have it lined up in their sights .
I may not agree with all of your posts in their entirety but I do find your posts a real pleasure to read versus the sometimes mean mouthings of those that have accidentally fallen into the gutter. And have totally forgotten to clean up their act before coming to this site.
