Palin assails Obama on abortion

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (UPI) -- Republican U.S. vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Saturday said Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is out of the mainstream on abortion.

Speaking at a large Republican gathering in Johnstown, Pa., the Alaska governor said the Illinois senator would appoint "activist" judges who would "continue to smother debates on this issue of life," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

"Mr. Obama is a politician who has long since left the middle ground on the issue of life," Palin said. "He said a woman shouldn't have to be 'punished with a baby.' He said that right here in Johnstown. It's about time we called him on it."

Obama last spring answered a woman's question about stopping abortion by saying he would teach his two daughters "first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby." A campaign spokesman later said Obama believes "children are miracles" and that steps need to be taken to reduce teen pregnancies and abortions.

"The more I hear from Senator Obama, the more I understand why he's so vague, and please, it's not negative or mean spirited to talk about his record," Palin said.

"I'm glad she talked about abortion," said James Nance, 36, of Hagerstown, Md. "We're killing babies and it's something that needs to be discussed."

Wedge Issue

Well maybe if you are raped a baby would be a punishment? Igorvitch you are right on point as usual. I am pro choice, but prevention is the best way to reduce abortion. We need education and birth control. By the way here is a little fact under the Clinton administration there was a 47.3% reduction in abortions. Under Bush a 14.7% increase. So if you are really against abortion you should be voting for the Democrats. How come nobody ever talks about those numbers? Can we say wedge issue. It is like finding OBL can't have that because that would end the war on terror and defense contractors won't make money.

abortion

I'm against abortion, except in cases of rape, incest and saving the mother's life. I've even voted for Republicans in the past, expecting them to do something about it. They've done nothing but TALK. They've controlled Congress for 16 of the last 20 years. Bush had a Republican Congress and, most critically, a conservative Supreme Court for 6 years (JHow else would he have won in 2000?) What's been done about abortion? NADA, nothing, Zilch. Why? Because like the article above it can be brought up each election and used as a political wedge issue to drive between ordinary Americans and their need to unite for their best interests. If I'm against most kinds of abortion how can I be a Democrat? Because of what I've said, because NO Republican has asked for a reduced price for birth control pills, because fundamentalists may have caused more unwanted pregnancies and consequently abortions with their campaign against sex education, available birth control, etc. than Democrats. Finally, to me the right to a decent life extends from the womb to the grave, not just to the richest among us.

double standard

isn't it ironic that these righous people are against killing babies yet support a war that kills other peoples babies, pregnant women, and the elderly? what makes their babies worth less? and contrary to right wing thinking, there are democrats who are against killing babies too but also are against killing grownup children. I lost a baby so I know how it feels,(also a grown son to diabetes) but I don't have the right to tell someone else what to do--its called the right to choose and freedom to run your own life as long as it doesn't infringe on someone elses freedom. also isn't it ironic that Paul and Hersh both post the same comment using the exact same words on several different stories in these newsletters? I would just like to see people get along, solve the problems together, and show some respect for others instead of all this name calling and nastiness. What kind of lesson is that teaching our precious children and grandchildren? If the Native Americans hadn't helped the pilgrims through that first winter, there wouldn't be a America so if they can do it so can we as democrats, republicans and independents. Remember we are all Americans.

BTW, I am a mother of two grown sons (17 and 19) and I think Bridget's out look is fine. There is nothing wrong with it at all and I don't see her as bitter.
