Old smoking habit hurts McCain, prof says

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- John McCain's smoking history and age indicate Sarah Palin would have as high as a 40 percent chance of becoming U.S. president, a university professor says.

McCain, 72, a former smoker poised to become the Republican presidential nominee, has about a 20 percent of dying in office and a higher rate of disability, John Banzhaf, George Washington University professor, said Wednesday in a release.

Palin, 44, McCain's running mate, is governor in Alaska.

McCain's smoking history boosts his risk of dying from lung cancer by about 700 percent, and his risk of dying of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also is greater, Banzhaf said. His age increases his odds of becoming disabled from conditions such as a stroke or Alzheimer's disease, which can impair judgment.

McCain has a 10-year death rate of between 35 percent and 50 percent, the professor said.

Potential health risks facing Democratic nominee Barack Obama, 47, are different, Banzhaf said. Men who are age 45 and are former smokers have less than a 5 percent chance of dying within the next 10 years, Banzhaf said. Even with an occasional lapse, Banzhaf said, Obama's 10-year death risk still is under 10 percent.

Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., is 66.

Bait 'n Switch Banzhaf...

Remember, this is the same Banzhaf who put out a headlined press release a few months ago about a wife being indicted for murdering her husband with second-hand smoke. It wasn't until you got to about the third paragraph of the story that you found out it was a grade-B movie plot at an amateur film festival instead of a real story.

Notice that he claims McCain has a 700% increase in lung cancer risk while he never mentions Obama's risk... *DESPITE* the fact that McCain quit smoking ALMOST THIRTY YEARS AGO ago while Obama supposedly quit just last year. I guess Banzhaf forgot about the whole "Quit smoking and live longer!" thing he usually pushes when he's not shilling for a candidate.

Talk about sleazy politics!

You are right about the personal attacks, but the mud slinging has been getting worse every election for the past 20 to 30 years. The more advanced we become in communication, the more trivial the news reporting. Idle minds are the Devil's workshop. With all the advances in technology, it seems that people have too much time on their hands to pry into other people's personal business. Many a person's life has been destroyed by idle gossip. When you can't beat someone fair and square -- make up lies. That's what the Dems are trying to do with Palin. Idle gossip for idle minds!

WHY

WHY--- are some people so ignorant when choosing a leader???
HE SMOKES...wow, does that make him a bad leader??? of course not...
I am sickened on how people choose leaders...their personal life should have nothing to do with whether they can handle leading and representing their country or not...
The only thing that people should consider about him is his age...72 years of age is kinda old for representing all ages of people...And why is his running mate under scrutiny for a daughter that became pregnant--- what on earth does that have to do with politics...Are AMERICANS really that starved for gossip...Grow up people--- decide on ability to lead and keep your noses out of peoples personal lives...Everybody has made mistakes, learn from them and move on already...

Well, let's look at the two who has admitted to it, Bill Clinton with pot but he didn't inhale, pretty good presidency; George W, who "tried" it(cocain) once but didn't like it, well, we won't go there will we? And as for my poor genes, 82 was a pretty good life expectancy for the '70s. My grand father died in 1978. lol

Gumboboy,
Your family may have poor genes, but I wouldn't count out John McCain. His mother who is in her ninetys looks much healthier than Bill Clinton's mom did when he took office. I don't know that whatever problems your grandfather had are what ANY one else has to look forward to, except you. This article is totally a smear job by liberals. Is there any information on how smoking pot and using cocaine have affected Obama's brain?
