Q&A: Growing Vegetables Under Flourescent Lights

Question: Can I be successful at tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, and cucumbers with artificial light rather than sunlight say a flourescent light? Jose D Bronx, NY

Answer: It depends on how you measure sucessful. Using fluorescent light will greatly extend the time it takes to grow vegetables to maturity by 2 to 4 times. The yields will only be a fraction of what would be produced under sunlight. Flourescent light is best used to start plants early when you have a limited growing season and you want extend it by starting vegetable seedlings inside.
