Q&A: Forcing Tulips and Daffodils

Question: I've read many FAQ's about forcing tulips and daffodils. Often you say to plant in a pot and then chill. My only temperature controled chilling area is a refigerator with very limited space. Pots are not an option.

Can I chill unpotted bulbs in a refrigerator and then plant them in a pot and place them immediately in a greenhouse? For an Easter bloom, what timelines should I use?

Answer: Although it may be possible to do what you want to do, the timing would be unpredictable. The chilling time includes rooting time, and this has to be achieved one way or another. If you decide to experiment, make sure the bulbs are not stored in with fruit such as apples as they emit a gas which will damage the bulbs.
