DALLAS (UPI) -- A dog abandoned in a Dallas park has been dubbed Hero after leading animal rescuers to a mother dog and her 10 newborn puppies.

Marina Tarashevsce, of the Dallas Dogrrr - Rescue, Rehab and Reform animal rescue group, said rescuers have been trying to round up abandoned animals in the south Dallas park for several weeks and a male dog that had previously eluded rescuers captured her attention March 10 when he barked at rescuers.

"He's never acted like that before and I was worried that maybe he was sick or something ... happened to him," Tarashevsce told KTVT-TV.

John Miller, a dog behaviorist, said the dog appeared to be trying to get rescuers to follow him.

"Every time we got closer he would go away and bark at us saying, 'keep coming, keep coming my way,'" Miller said.

Miller said the dog led them to an area where they could hear puppies crying.

"Somehow we found them ... right by the creek in the mud, just mom and babies and it's pitch black and it's so difficult to get there," Tarashevsce said.

The rescuers said the dog earned the name Hero.

"He led us there," Miller said. He took us to the puppies. That is exactly what he was trying to do. I've heard about stuff like this, but it was awesome to witness it.

The rescuers said the mother, named Mona, and her 10 puppies are doing well after being brought in out of the cold. Hero, Mona and the puppies are being kept together at a foster home, the rescuers said.

"One baby looks like a tiny Rottweiler and one looks just like Hero so there were probably several dads. Of course these pups have only one true dad and hero, and although he might not be the biological father he is the most loving and nurturing dog dad," the rescue said in a Facebook post.
