VICTORVILLE, Calif. (UPI) -- Firefighters in California said four puppies were rescued from a house fire, but a fifth puppy did not survive.

San Bernardino County Fire Department said firefighters arrived on the scene of the blaze about 1 a.m. Saturday and an occupant of the Victorville home told firefighters, "my babies are inside."

"Firefighters were able to clarify that the 'babies' trapped inside were actually 5 puppies," the fire department said in a statement.

The department said firefighters were able to rescue four of the trapped puppies, but one other did not survive.

Officials said it took about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control. They said the cause of the fire is being investigated and the home did not have working smoke detectors.

"County Fire would like to remind residents that working smoke detectors should be installed in every home. Smoke detectors save lives!" the department said.
