Two-legged chihuahua finds home with animal control officer

HIGHLAND, Calif. (UPI) -- A two-legged chihuahua found as a stray in California last week has found a new home with the county's supervising animal control officer.
Doug Smith, supervising animal control officer for San Bernardino County, entered his name in a Sunday morning lottery for the dog after no one came forward to claim him by the Saturday night deadline.
Smith's daughter, Rodri, took an instant shine to the chihuahua, who was named Joey by rescuers.
"It's my first dog and I'm going to train him the best I can and make sure he has fun and have the best life," Rodri Smith told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
Joey, who has only a left front leg and a right back leg, was found running loose Feb. 3 and did not have a collar or a microchip to identify his owner. However, officers said he was in good health and appeared well-fed.
The canine, estimated to be 5 or 6 years old, quickly became a local celebrity and nearly 20 people showed up Sunday morning to participate in the adoption lottery.
"He is a truly unique dog, not just because he has two legs, but because he is so capable and does not let his challenging circumstances slow him down," Animal Care and Control Chief Brian Cronin said in a statement Friday.
