CHICAGO (UPI) -- A Chicago animal rescue group said it has taken custody of an 85-pound beagle dubbed "Kale Chips, because that's pretty much what his future looks like."

The One Tail at a Time dog rescue said the beagle, thought to be 7 or 8 years old, was surrendered Tuesday at Chicago Animal Control and members of the rescue's Transfer Team had to use a wagon to wheel the beagle out of the shelter to his new home at the rescue.

"We're calling him Kale Chips, because that's pretty much what his future looks like. We've slimmed down dogs almost as big as this, so we're up to the challenge," the rescue said in a Facebook post.

Rescue workers said Kale Chips tipped the scales at 85 pounds, well over the 22-25 pound range for a healthy adult male of his breed.

Heather Owen, co-founder of the rescue, told The Huffington Post tests are being performed to see if the beagle has any medical problems contributing to his weight, but officials suspect his lifestyle was the cause of his obesity.

"It's our assumption that the owner wasn't able to walk him or care for him," Owen said. [His] nails were really long and the owner certainly overfed him.
