Q&A: Installing Landscape Fabric

Question: I want to use landscaping cloth around my shrubs and put rocks over it to control weeds. How do I keep the cloth down? Do I need to use stakes on the edges or how do I tack it down?

Answer: Since you're going to cover the landscape cloth with decorative rock, you can temporarily hold it down with stones as you're installing it. Once you have it laid out the way you want it, simply pour the rocks over and rake them out, removing the stones as you go. The weight of the rocks will keep the cloth in place. Make sure that it's butted up snugly against the wood or plastic border material. If the area is bordered by lawn, dig a shallow trench around the bed and place the edge of the fabric in the trench, then fill the trench with stone. It's very important that the fabric is buried so it doesn't get caught in the lawn mower.
