Q&A: Constructing Terraced Gardens

Question: I am looking for information on how best to construct a frame for a garden bed where the land slopes downward. Also, what do you suggest I use to support the frame once it is in place?

Answer: It sounds like you need to build terrace beds. It's hard to describe how to construct these without illustrations, but the best image I can conjure up is that you build 3-sided raised beds to create "steps" up the slope. You can use landscape timbers, stone, or any number of materials to make the terraces. You can use large spikes to secure wood frames to the soil. You may have to adjust the grade of the slope a bit as you go to accomodate the frames, and might also have to bring in soil to build up what is there, depending on the quality of the soil and its nutrient levels. Many garden planning and landscaping books have plans and instructions for building terraces.
