Back-to-School and 'Blended' Families
Here are a few basic guidelines on back to school in a 'blended family,' that apply to all ages:
1. At the beginning of each school year, meet your child's teacher as early as possible. (Back to school night is usually NOT the time for personal discussions.) Schedule an appointment, and keep it short, no more than 10-15 minutes. Give a brief, relevant family background, such as which parent the kids reside with, weekend visitation, how to reach you, etc.
2. Volunteer to be a trip chaperone or help at a school activity. This is especially important when your kids don't live with you; they see that you are involved and care.
3. Take responsibility for your child getting schoolwork and projects done when they are with you - don't pass it off on the other parent. If it's not finished on your weekend, follow up during the week with a phone call to your child (if age appropriate) to see how it's going.
