Israel concerned over Abbas' resignation

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- A day after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas announced his resignation, Israeli officials expressed concern for the peace process, officials said.

After Abbas' broadcast announcement from Ramallah, West Bank, Thursday evening, Israeli President Shimon Peres urged the Palestinian leader to remain. Peres said Abbas' departure would deprive the Palestinian people of an independent state, Haaretz said.

The newspaper said Peres told Abbas if he leaves, "the situation in the region would deteriorate. Stay for the Palestinian people's sake."

While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu refrained from publicly commenting on the situation, behind closed doors he reportedly told officials it was in Israel's interest to have a strong Abbas who could move negotiations forward, the paper said.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said he hopes Abbas' decision will not damage attempts to resume peace negotiations, the paper said.

I guess it's better to know who you are dealing with than to not know. While Abbas has been often times stated as a moderate, I see nothing to support that for: I cannot think of ONE [I ask for only 1] action step he has taken to confirm he is a partner for peace. Heck, he cannot even acknowledge Israel's right to exist as a Jewish State. On the other hand he does not [at least openly] call for Israel’s destruction. However, Israel must be cautious as they border the West Bank where Abbas is in power and with the history of the Palestinians, the fact that the Palestinians voted in Hamas in Gaza, the fact that written charters of both the Palestinian Authority [PA] and Hamas call for the destruction of Israel, Israel must be very cautious. What I have most difficulty with is the revisionist history the Palestinians as well as with most if not all the Muslim nations, that teach in their schools state that the Jews came to that area and stole their land. That concept has never stood up to any scrutiny. BOTTOM LINE: Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish State and protect her citizens for known enemies. Abbas, the Palestinian people, the Muslim nations as a whole along with Hamas, Hezbollah
and other identified terrorist organizations all have either called for Israel’s destruction or have take action steps to destroy Israel.

Abbas is trying to solidify his base. If the Israelis want him to stay in power they should not mention that. His own partie's enemies will use that against him. After all, if the Israelis like him, he must be a Jew Lover!! Arghhhh, terrible. You know how those people are. They want someone who insists on killing infidels, starting with the Jews. That is all they know, peacekeeping is surrendering to Satan.
