Pakistani army officer attacked by gunmen

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (UPI) -- Two gunmen on a motorcycle fired at a Pakistani brigadier's vehicle in Islamabad Friday, wounding him in the second such attack on an army officer in a month.

The officer's driver also was wounded, Dawn newspaper reported.

A police official told the newspaper the two were taken to a hospital where they were reported in stable condition.

"We have collected a pistol from the site of the attack and are looking for further evidence," the police official said.

An eyewitness said the attackers were waiting for the officer to leave his home and began firing as soon as the officer's vehicle reached the main road, Dawn reported.

On Oct. 22, a Pakistani brigadier on leave from a U.N. peacekeeping mission was shot and killed in the capital. Also last month, a military vehicle in Islamabad was shot at but no one was wounded.

The Pakistani military has been waging a ground and air assault since Oct. 17 against the Taliban, al-Qaida and other terror groups in rugged South Waziristan.

The country has been wracked by a series of deadly militant attacks in the past month in which about 200 have died.
