Suspects' mom apologizes to burn victim
Sherry Jarvis's two sons and three other youths are accused of setting 15-year-old Michael Brewer on fire Oct. 12 in Fort Lauderdale, CNN reported Thursday.
Police detectives said witnesses saw a blazing Brewer run about a hundred yards, rip off his shirt and jump into a swimming pool. Police said the teens set Brewer on fire after a series of incidents that began when he didn't pay one of the suspects $40 for a video game.
"I'd just like to express how horribly sorry we are," Jarvis said in a statement Wednesday. "We pray for Michael's recovery every day, that he gets stronger, which we know in our hearts that he will.
Prosecutors earlier this week received more time to build their cases against the four 15-year-olds and one 13-year-old. Prosecutors have until Nov. 12 to charge four of the five as adults, or charge them all as juveniles. The 13-year-old cannot face adult charges under Florida law, but his status could change if Brewer dies.
Brewer is on a ventilator to help him breathe and remains heavily sedated, CNN said.
Jarvis said her family has received death threats and vandals hit their home, which has been unoccupied since the incident.

I started competing with men in the workplace when my husband left me with an autisic child.
Fortunately I was educated and able to earn about twice what the average man earns in a day when few women earned even half of what a man earned. It was a little irritating to train men for jobs that paid them twice more what I was paid but I knew when to put up and when to shut up. I retired in good form at 60. I raised that one child myself and never remarried as it was clear men are not in it for the long haul. Only when things are going their way do they stick to the job. I did not want my child raised by a stepfather either, I had one of those, he was a pervert. So many are. At any rate, my son and his wife have been able to keep Mom in the home because my son knows how much better his life could have been if Mom had been able to stay home with him. In recent years the ex-husband has tried to ingratiate himself with my son and his new kin. That has not worked out well for him. Because that man was his father, I never told him what my opinion of his father was. Never. Even when I would have loved to do so. .that was his father and I kept my mouth off of him.
But, while autistic, he is not stupid. My son is well aware of his father's failings and he knows he is looking for a mealticket. Too bad, so sad.
And the one thing I can tell you is that even though I never wanted to be anything but wife and mother, life forced me to be the breadwinner and so I am very glad I had an education that was practical for earning a good living.
So Bob, ask yourself why women want to compete with men vs staying home in the presumed life of luxury they could have had with men.

I am so sorry to read about something like this happening. I still say that when Mothers started competing with men in the workplace, for bigger and better things, they neglected the "stay at home and teach your children right from wrong" in their young years when correction and mannerisms are a must. Parents should never ever leave that up to anyone else while seeking the almighty dollar. We are seeing the results of this-- in this generation. My opinion only it seems.
