Third D.A. in Manhattan since 1941 elected

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Cy Vance Jr. Tuesday became the third person in almost 70 years to be elected district attorney of New York County, also known as Manhattan.

Vance, a Democrat and son of Cyrus Vance, U.S. secretary of state in the Carter administration, had more than 90 percent of the vote, the New York Daily News reported. He takes over an office with about 500 lawyers and a budget of close to $80 million a year.

The fictional Manhattan D.A.'s office on the NBC drama "Law & Order" has had more district attorneys in the past decade than the real office has had since 1941, when Frank Hogan was elected. Hogan served until his death in 1973 and Robert Morgenthau, who won a special election to succeed him, is still in office.

Vance was an assistant district attorney in Manhattan before going into private practice.

"I am so honored to have the opportunity to lead this nationally-recognized office and build upon the many successes of my former boss, Robert Morgenthau," Vance said. "I am looking forward to working on the new plans and programs I have proposed to keep our streets safe and our justice system fair."
