37 killed in Philippine landslides

MACO, Philippines (UPI) -- Philippines officials say at least 37 people are dead or missing in two landslides that struck a municipality in the Davao Region in Mindanao within 11 hours.

The first landslide, in Maco, in the in the Compostela Valley province, killed six people, injured seven others and left seven more people missing.

The second landslide, around 3 a.m. Sunday, killed 11 and left 13 people missing, including village Chairman Jovencio Anquera, the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. reported.

At least 19 people were reported injured.

A state of emergency was declared as Philippine troops, police and civilians searched for people thought to be buried.

Thirteen houses and Maco's Masara barangay hall were buried in the initial landslide. Twenty-eight more homes were buried in the second, bigger incident.

Many of the victims were said to be entombed inside their houses, ABS-CBN said.

The mudslides are blamed on continuous rains and small-scale mining activities in the area.
