JFK workers accused of stealing jewelry

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Two baggage handlers at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport allegedly stole $280,000 worth of jewelry from a bag, authorities said.

The Queens District Attorney's Office said one of the suspected jewelry thieves, Albert Acevedo, allegedly informed several of his co-workers at the airport about his valuable discovery inside a passenger's bag, the New York Post reported Thursday.

"I made a good find today," Acevedo was quoted as telling co-workers following the alleged Aug. 25 theft.

The bag holding the jewelry belonged to gem merchant David Diamond, who had been on his way to Los Angeles when the theft occurred at the airport.

Authorities say Acevedo and another suspect, Angelo Riviello, allegedly targeted Diamond's bag to search through and then pocketed their findings.

The Post said both men allegedly admitted to taking some of the 925 pieces of jewelry missing from the bag after being arrested by authorities but most of the items are still missing.
