Hanna gains strength near Leeward Islands

MIAMI (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Hanna is gaining strength near the Leeward Island and could become a hurricane by Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said.

At 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, the center of Hanna was about 260 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Island. The storm was moving toward the west-northwest at about 7 mph.

Forecasters said Hanna -- the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season -- was likely to remain on a motion between west-northwest and northwest through Friday, and gradually move away from the Northern Leeward Islands toward well to the northeast of the Bahamas Friday and Saturday.

Maximum sustained winds were near 50 mph with higher gusts, and Hanna is expected to strengthen gradually -- and possibly become a hurricane by Saturday.
