Mississippi agencies take Katrina goods
Mississippi agencies receiving goods intended for the 2005 storm victims included the Department of Corrections and the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, CNN said, reporting on its own investigation of the matter.
The goods, which included house wares and beds, sat in government warehouses for two years before the Federal Emergency Management Agency's giveaway to various federal and state agencies this year, the report said. FEMA said it cost more than $1 million a year to store the supplies.
Some of the items given away had been donated by the private sector after Katrina, but most were purchased as starter kits for people living in trailers provided by the agency, CNN said.
"It's scary to know that there are supplies that they are harboring and people (are) in need right now as we speak today," said Sharon Hanshaw, director of Coastal Women for Change, a non-profit group that helps storm victims.
