Stars join anti-horse carriage effort

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Several U.S. celebrities and animal rights activists say they're backing the effort to ban horse-drawn carriages from streets around New York's Central Park.

Actor Alec Baldwin, pop singer Pink and rock-and-roll singer Chrissie Hynde agree the carriages contribute to the mistreatment of animals and cause a safety risk for New York residents, the New York Post reported Monday.

Some critics say they only want to find ways to better the industry, while others believe it needs to be completely eliminated.

"My first inclination was to try to find a way to do a better job. But I (now see) that ... to make a profit, there's no way for them to treat the horses properly," Brooklyn Councilman Tony Avella said.

I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT WITH THE CONTINUED GAS PRICES GOING UP THROUGH THE ROOF THAT MANY A PERSON WILL START THINKING OF THE OLDER TIMES
WHEN A HORSE WAS A PROMISE OF TRANSPORTATION AND
THE ANIMAL GAVE LOVE IN RETURN. I AM FOR THEM MAKING SURE THAT THE ANIMALS ARE WELL TREATED AND TAKEN CARE OF BAN THE OTHER TRAFFIC IN THAT AREA

Horse drawn carriages

I think that most of the people need to get a life. Horse drawn carriages have been around a lot longer than the Autos for one thing and there is a love for the animals and that mode of transportation. Only in America do we favor stupidity over real life. Most of the so called "Celeb's" are in my mind people who have only one talent and thinking is not one of them..
Some of the better actors can follow a scrip but can not think on their own. And then there are too many people that just want to control other people. WHY?? MFA

There should be strict regulations on how the animals are treated, however, in this world fueled on blood for oil, how can anyone think horse drawn carriages should be banned? This mode of transportation has been around for eons and is a viable alternative to motorized vehicles!

Green has a point. The horse carriages are so beautiful and unique how about no gas powerered cars or trucks in the area where the carriages are? The rides are a big draw especially to those that don't even know what a horse is! But the horses need to be safe!
