Hurricane Bertha nears Category 2 status

MIAMI (UPI) -- Bertha, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2008, was approaching Category 2 strength Monday over the mid-Atlantic Ocean with winds near 90 mph.

A report from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 11 a.m., Bertha was 775 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at 15 mph

Bertha had been moving quickly -- faster than 20 mph -- since forming as a tropical storm Thursday. The slowing and fact the system is moving over warmer waters indicate strengthening is likely, forecasters said. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of 96-110 mph.

The hurricane center it was too early to predict any possible landfall for Bertha, although the five-day forecast model indicated the storm would be turning north well east of the Caribbean or U.S. coasts.

AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist John Kocet said he was certain Bertha would swing to the north.

"It is a certainty that Bertha will not enter the Gulf of Mexico and will not impact energy interests in the Gulf," he said.
