Young peregrine falcon killed by truck

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -- One of Indiana's young peregrine falcons was killed and another seriously injured after they were hit by trucks along Interstate 65 Fourth of July weekend.

The two birds were among four falcons born this spring to a mating pair in downtown Indianapolis, The Indianapolis Star reported Monday.

Birdwatchers and volunteers for the state Department of Natural Resources have been keeping tabs on Magee and his three sisters, Edna, Adira and Val since they were hatched.

Burt Hanneman found Magee injured along I-65 and saw Edna trying to land on the other side of the highway when she was struck and killed by a truck.

Magee was scheduled to be examined Monday by a veterinarian who specializes in birds.

"If he is too far damaged for rehab, he will likely be euthanized," said Richard Kinnett, a volunteer for the Department of Natural Resources.
