Controversial Iraqi uranium in Canada
News of the uranium's arrival Saturday reportedly came as a surprise to Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, The Gazette newspaper reported Monday.
Some 50 trucks will transport the uranium, also known as yellowcake, to the northern Ontario town of Blind River. It will be processed at a facility owned by Cameco Corp., the world's largest publicly traded uranium company, the report said.
Cameco spokesman Charlie Martens said the purchase was part of a U.S.-brokered deal and "is not top secret," although its value wasn't disclosed.
"We are taking uranium out of politically volatile part of the world," Martens said.
Edwards said he's puzzled by the size of the purchase, as only about 15 percent of uranium processed by Cameco is used as fuel in nuclear reactors.
"It seems a very strange thing that they would be bringing in all this uranium," he told the Gazette.

I really love the way government officials always are reportedly "surprised" at the disclosure of secret deals with other foreign governments - C'mon, folks, hard to believe that the head of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility "didn't know" that a shipment of 550 tons of uranium from ANYWHERE was coming into his country!!! Maybe it's time to look for a new head of that organization, if this one is so clueless, eh?
Also, the story mentioned it was a "U.S. brokered deal" and the value of it was "undisclosed" -- excuse me, but I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that SOMEBODY (hmmmm - could it be our own current U.S. administration??) will be profiting immensely from a deal which appears to be so conveniently taking place outside the rules, regulation and public scrutiny of the United States! Not to mention how nice it is not to have to explain to anybody how the U.S. came into possession of such a quantity of Iraqi uranium!! No wonder Iraqi leaders are demanding a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. presence and military forces, eh?
