Late Latin crapulentus "very drunk" which, in turn, is from the Latin crapula "intoxication." The root of "crapula" is Greek kraipale "hangover." Unrelated to "crap" which derives from the name of an initial losing throw in the dice game "craps," itself derived from "crabs."
