Latin assidu-us, participle from assid-ere "to sit by or at something" < ad- "to" + sedere "to sit." The same Proto-Indo-European root developed into English "sit," "set," "saddle," and "seat," Russian sest' "sit," sed-lo "saddle," and the "-shad" in Sanskrit "upanishad" from upanisad with -sad "sitting."
