Richard Sheridan
Richard Brinsley Sheridan left behind his original intents to study law to become a playwright. His first play, "The Rivals," was initially a failure, but a change in the lead actor turned it into a success upon its second performance. Besides writing his comedies of manners, Sheridan was also a public speaker and politician. He served in Parliament from 1780 to 1812, four years before his death.
