Only of fright. In the movie Dr. No the British superspy is famously threatened by a tarantula which is snuck into his bedroom. However, James had little to actually fear as the bite of the tarantula, although painful, is usually not dangerous to humans, although it is powerful enough to kill small birds, amphibians, and mice. Found in the southwest U.S. and Central America, the body of the tarantula can be up to three inches long and, including the legs, up to ten inches across.
