PUNE, India (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in India rescued a leopard found struggling to stay above water inside a nearly 60-foot-deep well.

A farmer in a village near Pune, Maharashtra, contacted the forest department Sunday morning after he discovered the leopard frantically swimming and roaring in panic inside the well near his home.

The forest department contacted the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Center, which is operated by the non-governmental organization Wildlife SOS.

The rescuers lowered a log into the well for the leopard to use as a floatation device while they worked on lowering a box trap.

The leopard entered the trap box about three hours after the rescue effort began.

Footage of the rescue was posted to YouTube by Wildlife SOS.

The leopard, a 3-year-old female, was examined at the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Center.

"The leopard was in a state of panic and had to be rescued immediately," veterinarian Ajay Deshmukh told NDTV.

The leopard was found to have evaded major injuries and was released back into the wild.
