OCEANSIDE, Calif. (UPI) -- Firefighters in California said they used the "jaws of life" to rescue a dog that became wedged between two large storage containers in a school yard.

Oceanside Fire Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence said Spike, a 12-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback, ran between the containers at South Oceanside Elementary School while playing with his owners Sunday.

The family called for help when Spike was unable to walk back out of the narrow gap between the storage containers and Carlsbad Fire Department crews soon arrived on the scene.

The firefighters were unable to move the large containers and they called the Oceanside Fire Department for assistance.

The Oceanside firefighters used the "jaws of life" to expand the gap between the containers by about 6 inches, which allowed Spike enough room to walk out.
