NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York police said officers searching for a burglar in a vacant building instead discovered eight tiny puppies wearing eight tiny sweaters.

The owner of the vacant building in Brooklyn called police when he heard suspicious noises coming from the third floor of the building, but responding officers said the source of the sounds turned out to be eight puppies wearing holiday sweaters.

The puppies were huddled together in a blanket-lined cage, police said. Police said the owner of the building had been suspecting there were squatters camping out on his property, but the humans fled and left the canines behind before police arrived.

"8 little fellas were rescued from an abandoned building today & on their way to Bklyn AC&C. Kudos to #nypd #AC&C," 61 Police Precinct tweeted Monday.

Police said the puppies are being given the proper shots and will be available for adoption starting Thursday at the Animal Care and Control branch in Brooklyn.
