How to make Halloween safe
Dr. Paul Pepe of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas suggests parents think ahead and eliminate hazards before they happen.
"Parents should make sure that the costumes fit properly. If the length of the costume is too long, children may trip and fall," Pepe says in a statement. "Also, consider using cosmetic makeup rather than masks to keep vision optimal."
Pepe also recommends to make sure that:
-- Costumes are flame-retardant.
-- The children are easy to spot after dark because they carry lights. Their costumes are bright-colored and have reflectors.
-- Trick or treaters should use the buddy system and travel in a group with adult supervision.
-- Not go out without a cell phone.
-- Busy intersections and poorly lit areas are avoided and trick-or-treaters know to stay clear of stranger's houses and unfamiliar pets.
-- Candy is checked before eaten and all unwrapped treats thrown out.
