Study: Asthma linked to child abuse
By studying the health and life histories of children in Puerto Rico, the researchers said they found children who suffered some form of physical or sexual abuse had a higher chance of developing the chronic condition, The Boston Globe reported Monday.
The study found that among the nearly 1,200 children questioned, 20 percent of those who admitted past abuse suffered from asthma. That figure was nearly double the findings among non-abused respondents, who had an 11.5 percent asthma rate.
Former American Thoracic Society President Dr. John Heffner told the Globe the study's findings made sense given the stressful nature of such traumatic childhood events.
"It certainly seems biologically plausible, particularly considering that it's hard to think of any more stressful circumstance for a child than physical or sexual abuse, especially when that abuse comes from within the family," Heffner said.

Yeah it's so much easier to blame it on something other then what the actual problem would be! My nephew has asthma and to think of how much my sister has gone through with him since he was born it really breaks my heart to hear these nasty stories about it!!! There are starving children out there maybe someone should pick an easier subject to study then asthma since obviously they have no clue what so ever and all these doctors out there have no clue either! Wow is this really what out $$$ is being spent on? For god sakes wake up people!!!

I agree. More junk science and wasted money and effort. Now parents with asthmatic kids are going to be worried they will be accused of child abuse because their sweethearts have asthma. By the way, I was abused and I do not have it, though I have a brother who was loved to distraciton and favored and he had asthma as a child. Maybe this is the abuse they are talking about. Being loved too much. Now that would be dumb.

Parents of guardians who expose a child to second hand smoke or allows a minor child to smoke should be chraged with child abuse under The Child Protection Act. So where is the study to show the link between asthma and second hand smoke?

Astma Linked to Child Abuse
I have two children that was BORN with asthma. Unless the abuse happened in another life, I doubt seriously that child abuse had anything to do with the disease. This country (as well as others) waste a considerable amount of money on absolutely STUPID research. Just think how much closer we could be to a CURE for asthma if funds were spent responsibly. I wonder how much more of a healthier life my children could have had, if only more responsible research was done. Thanks for wasting my time with more useless research findings.

IT MUST BE TRUE
I THINK THIS MIGHT BE TRUE BUT NOT EVERY ABUSED CHILD WILL DEVELOPE ASTHMA AND SOME CHILDREN WHO HAVEN'T BEEN ABUSED WILL. IT'S NOT THE ONLY THING THAT CAUSES OF ASTHMA. HOWEVER I WAS SEXUALLY ABUSED AND HAVE VERY BAD ASTHMA, TO THE POINT WHERE I HAVE GONE INTO RESPIRATORY FAILURE AND HAD TO BE INTUBATED X 3.
