College student suicidal thoughts common

BOSTON (UPI) -- Fifteen percent of U.S. college students report having seriously considered attempting suicide and 5 percent report a suicide attempt, researchers said.

Psychologist David J. Drum of the University of Texas at Austin and colleagues used data form the Web-based survey of 26,000 students from 70 colleges and universities conducted by the National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education in the spring of 2006.

Six percent of undergraduates and 4 percent of graduate students reported seriously considering suicide within the 12 months prior to answering the survey, Drum said.

The majority of students described their typical episode of suicidal thinking as intense and brief -- more than half the episodes lasting one day or less. The researchers found more than half of students who experienced a recent suicidal crisis did not seek professional help or tell anyone about their suicidal thoughts.

The reasons given for their suicidal thinking was: relief from emotional or physical pain; romantic relationships; the desire to end their life; and problems with school or academics.

The findings were presented at the 116th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Boston.

This sad news warrants a cause for action

This is like the movie "Dead Poets Society." The students must feel down because of certain factors in their sad lives.

Parents, professors, and guidance counsellors should work hand in hand to address this problem so that college students would think of graduating and taking on a white collar job instead of killing themselves in the middle of college.
