Dating violence higher in NYC than nation
Researchers were granted permission to enroll more than 1,300 New York City high school students from age 13 to 21 -- most were age 15 or 16 years -- anonymously with their parents' consent in the study.
Researchers at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault and Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health said New York teens report higher levels of sexual violence than the national average -- nationally, between 7 percent to 10.2 percent of teens ages 12 to 17 report some form of sexual assault.
The study also said that 89 percent of those who have experienced sexual violence knew the person, 28 percent of those who reported having perpetrated sexual violence against their dating partner also reported having carried a weapon in the past month and 60 percent of youth who were physically violent with dates also reported having engaged in other physical fights.
Almost 10 percent said that their partner touched them sexually when they didn't want to be touched and 6.7 percent said they were forced to have sex against their will, the study said.
