HOLIDAY WISH LIST: Greater Hartford Charities Ask For Your Help

The Hartford Courant, Conn. on

Published in Senior Living Features

A record number of nonprofits statewide -- 290 -- have listed their holiday needs through a searchable online database compiled by the Connecticut Council For Philanthropy and posted at http://www.holidaywishlist.CTphilanthropy.net.

"We received more responses from nonprofits than any time in the 22-year history of the Holiday Wish List," said Nancy Roberts, council president. "That means there are more choices for holiday and year-end giving and volunteering to help others in need."

The list, which includes organizations serving Greater Hartford, offers individuals, organizations and companies opportunities to help -- through volunteering and donations.

The listing below offers a small portion of the wishes of local organizations included in "Ways To Share... A Holiday Wish List." But the number of organizations on the list and their needs remain much larger.

Individuals, companies and civic groups can visit http://www.holidaywishlist.CTphilanthropy.net for the council's full online database -- searchable by town, type of service provided and organization.

The Holiday Wish List is primarily intended for the winter holidays, ending on Three Kings Day, Jan. 6, according to the council, but can also be used as a resource year-round. Nonprofits also were invited to list a "BIG WISH," an item that is not specific to the holidays.

"We hope 'Ways to Share...A Holiday Wish List' will encourage anyone who can make charitable gifts of time, money or goods to make a real difference in people's lives, especially those hit hardest by the economy," Roberts said.

Connecticut Children's Medical Center (CCMC) is the only freestanding children's hospital between Boston and Philadelphia. We provide a full range of primary and subspeciality, surgical and intensive pediatric care to children from birth to 18. We have inpatient facilities in Hartford and Waterbury and major outpatient centers in Hartford, Danbury, Farmington, Glastonbury and Shelton. The CCMC School educates and cares for children with emotional and behavioral challenges.

Wishes: The holidays are a difficult time for children who have to be in the hospital and for many of our patient families who are in their homes but lack financial resources. Therefore, we seek donations of funds, gift cards, toys and arts and crafts to be able to provide a holiday celebration for every inpatient and his or her siblings and for patient families who we know cannot afford to give gifts to their children or have a holiday celebration of their own. BIG WISH -- Many families cannot afford to meet the health needs for their children once they leave the hospital. It can be as simple as needing a bed for a child who is recovering from surgery when the family sleeps on the floor in their home, to buying a particular medication that is not covered by available insurance or where the family has no insurance. Our Caring and Sharing Fund never has enough donations to meet the basic needs of our families. Major donations to build that fund are an amazing way to make the difference in the life of a child and his or her family.

Wishes: We would like to provide $100 grocery store gift cards for 15 of our working families who do not qualify for state financial assistance. Although many of our working families struggle to make ends meet, they do not qualify for many of the financial entittlements provided by state and local agencies. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES -- We are looking for entertainers for our yearly holiday party for the families we serve on December 18, 2011, from 1-4 pm. Entertainment is an important piece to creating a fun environment for this activity, therefore, we are looking for volunteer magicians, carolers, dancers, etc. BIG WISH -- We would like an iPod/MP3 compatible stereo system for our waiting room area. This will help our clients with privacy while they wait to be seen. The room that we currently use has a thin dividing wall that you can hear the conversation on the other side. The stereo will help not only to block out the conversation on the other side but to also entertain our guests/clients as they wait to be seen.
