White to Play

Published in Chess Puzzles

White’s a pawn up, but a more forceful approach is needed so this endgame doesn’t go on forever.

Solution:

This is a very nice example of a pawn breakthrough assisted by the rook in a spectacular way: 1.c6 bxc6 2.Rb5 axb5 3.b7 Rxa5 4.b8Q+ Kd7 5.Qe5 Ra4 6.Qg7+ Kd6 7.Qxg6+ Kc5 8.g4 and the queen can hold off the rook and king with their two pawns while the g-pawn heads for promotion and an easy win.
