The knight fork in chess is one every beginner is shown. Here we also have a knight fork coming that wins the Black queen in order to get into a pawn up endgame. It’s a challenging problem, but that is one big hint.

Solution:

This is an actual position from Marovic-Tsagan, 1964. The hint about winning the Black queen to end up a pawn up means White had to give his up earlier! 19.Qxg6!! hxg6 20.Bxf7+! Rxf7 21.Rh8+ Kxh8 22.Nxf7+ Kh7 23.Nxd6 with a winning endgame. If you would like to see how the endgame is won, here is the whole game: Marovic,Drazen - Tsagan,T [D68] 1964 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e3 0–0 6.Rc1 Nbd7 7.Nf3 c6 8.Bd3 dxc4 9.Bxc4 Nd5 10.Bxe7 Qxe7 11.0–0 Nxc3 12.Rxc3 e5 13.Qc2 exd4 14.exd4 Nf6 15.Re1 Qd6 16.Ng5! Bg4 17.Rg3 Bh5 18.Rh3 Bg6? 19.Qxg6! hxg6 20.Bxf7+! Rxf7 21.Rh8+ Kxh8 22.Nxf7+ Kh7 23.Nxd6 Rd8 24.Re6 Nd5 25.Nf7 Rf8 26.Ng5+ Kh6 27.Nf3 Rf4 28.h4! Rf8 29.Ne5 Nf4 30.Rd6 Kh7 31.f3 Re8 32.g3! Ne2+ 33.Kf2 Nxd4 34.f4 Nf5 35.Rd7 Re7 36.Rd8 Nh6 37.Rh8+ Kxh8 38.Nxg6+ Kg8 39.Nxe7+ Kf7 40.Nc8 Ke6 41.Kf3 a5 42.Nb6 g6 43.g4 Nf7 44.Nc4 a4 45.Ke4 Nh6 46.Ne5 c5 47.g5 Nf5 48.Nxg6 Nd6+ 49.Kf3 Nc4 50.h5 Nd2+ 51.Ke2 1–0
